“The process emerged after revisiting a previous technique used in my painting practice. This involved altering tools or creating new ones to achieve a variety of marks. I looked to this method when I wanted to instill a sense of freshness and spontaneity. During the painting process, my abstract works typically start with a reference that is eventually altered, layered upon, or sometimes abandoned. After a while, a totally new and seemingly unrelated image would emerge, though glimmers of previous steps would often shine through. I love the idea of beginning with a guiding structure and then letting the progress unfold as needed. The claywork for the Mug of the Month functions similarly in that the marble’s variation is the first area of response. Each mug requires a different set of compositional decisions that are made quickly and in the moment. Once applied, the marks cannot be undone or easily erased, so full concentration is needed.
The final designs mimic the laminated metamorphic rocks one might discover in nature, a diagram of an object’s magnetic field, or a representation of aerodynamic trajectories. I chose to work with a limited, more graphic palette to highlight moments of contrast within subtle value shifts. Now, more than ever, it is clear the structures that once supported us are changing, crumbling, and transforming. Sometimes these changes feel extreme while others are less obvious. These mugs can serve as a reminder to tap into your inner guidance, trust your choices, and flow accordingly. We are all interconnected, powerful, autonomous forces capable of countering uncertainty with creative solutions.”

The included images represent Marisa in full decoration mode. After lots of tests and practice pieces, she has transitioned from hand-carving designs to using vinyl resist shapes. This allowed strategic placement while creating a window to view the marbling beneath the marks. The stars served as “checkpoints” on the brush stroke’s route and influenced their direction greatly. Once complete, she added intentionally placed, hand-painted stars as a final response and finishing touch. Each mug follows the same strategies but every one is truly one-of-a-kind.
She is doing their best not to pick favorites!
