Watching several episodes of The Chosen, I was really struck by the terracotta objects on screen, especially the hanging oil lamps and the Hanukkah lamps. That curiosity sent me down a very enjoyable research rabbit hole, exploring both historic Judaica sources and Roman–Hasmonean influences on these forms and designs.
I worked with tools appropriate to the time period, my hands, a paddle, and smooth stones. I also made a paper template for the final Roman-style lamp. As you can see, my first attempt ended up about the size of a shoe and is now destined to become a tiki torch for the patio. One piece didn’t even make it to the kiln, and the whole process left me with a much deeper appreciation for clay.
