Historical face jugs are handmade clay vessels shaped like human faces, often with exaggerated features like wide eyes and big teeth. They were made in the 1800s, especially in the American South, by potters using local materials and simple techniques. Many are connected to African American artisans, who may have used them for spiritual or protective purposes. Today, they are appreciated as unique and expressive pieces of folk art.

I began this project by throwing a jug using 5.5 pounds of clay, which was more than I typically use and a bit of a challenge. After the jug had firmed up, I started adding the facial features. I watched a few video tutorials for guidance, then jumped in, beginning with the nose. The process was both engaging and enjoyable, and I discovered that I really love sculpting with clay.
