Art educators often face challenges when it comes to professional development. Their unique needs can be overlooked during typical training days, leaving them without the support they deserve. Recognizing this gap, the PennOhio Clay Guild launched Clay:SPARK, a pilot program in conjunction with ESC of Eastern Ohio, in March 2026 designed specifically for K-12 art teachers. This program combined hands-on clay workshops with STEAM integration to offer meaningful growth opportunities. The success of this pilot offers valuable lessons for supporting art educators and enriching their classrooms.

Creating a Program Tailored for Art Teachers
Jen, one of the founding members of the PennOhio Clay Guild is a life-long educator. Her insight helped shape Clay:SPARK into a professional learning series that truly meets the needs of art teachers. The goal was to provide sessions that go beyond surface-level training and offer practical skills and knowledge that teachers can bring back to their students.
The program was designed to be flexible, allowing participants to choose from a variety of sessions based on their interests, knowledge, and skill levels. This approach ensured that every teacher could find something valuable, whether they were beginners or more experienced in working with clay.
Highlights from the March 2026 Professional Learning Day
About 30 art teachers gathered at the PennOhio Clay Guild studio for a full day of workshops and demonstrations. The sessions included:
Wheel Throwing (Beginner and Intermediate)
Fundamentals of Clay
Glaze Application and Materials
Hand Building Techniques
Kiln Operations and Safety
Surface Design
Raku Overview
The day concluded with an interactive Raku and Horsehair pottery demonstration, showcasing unique firing techniques that inspire creativity, and perhaps, lesson plans!
Experienced members of the guild were selected to led all sessions, sharing their expertise and passion. This peer-led model fostered a collaborative atmosphere where teachers could ask questions and exchange ideas freely.
Positive Feedback and Future Plans
The feedback from participating teachers was overwhelmingly positive. Many appreciated the hands-on nature of the workshops and the opportunity to learn from experienced artists and engage with their peers on the joys and challenges of teaching. Teachers valued the chance to deepen their skills in a supportive environment tailored just for them.
Encouraged by the pilot’s success, the PennOhio Clay Guild plans to expand Clay:SPARK to reach more school districts across Pennsylvania and Ohio. The program aims to build a stronger network of art educators who can access ongoing support and resources.
Ongoing Support Beyond the Workshops
Participants in Clay:SPARK receive a free Satellite Educator Membership to the PennOhio Clay Guild. This membership offers continued access to guidance on topics from kiln repair to sourcing materials. The guild stands ready to assist teachers whenever they need help, recognizing the important role they play in nurturing creativity in our society.
This ongoing support helps art educators feel connected and valued, reducing the isolation that can come with specialized teaching roles.
Supporting Art Educators Strengthens Students
Programs like Clay:SPARK show how targeted professional development can make a real difference. By focusing on the specific needs of art teachers, the PennOhio Clay Guild aims to help educators build confidence and skills that directly benefit their students. As the program grows, it promises to bring more opportunities for creative learning and professional growth to schools in the region.
Art educators looking for meaningful professional development should watch for upcoming Clay:SPARK sessions and feel free to give us a call if you ever have questions or would like some guidance! We'll do our best to help.
