The PennOhio Clay Guild launched the Quarterly Clay Quest (QCQ) program in 2026 to inspire and challenge its members. This initiative encourages member artists to explore new ideas, techniques, and skills through themed prompts each quarter. The program not only sparks creativity, but also fosters growth by pushing members to research and experiment beyond their usual practices.

The Birth of Quarterly Clay Quest

The idea behind Quarterly Clay Quest was simple: provide a fresh challenge every three months that motivates members to stretch their skills and knowledge. The first prompt, introduced in the first quarter of 2026, was Historical. This theme invited participants to dive into the rich traditions and stories behind pottery from various cultures and time periods.

Members embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. They researched historical techniques, styles, and cultural references, then translated their findings into unique ceramic pieces. The program culminated in a presentation of their work at our Creative Roundtable event at the end of March, where artists shared their work and the stories behind them.

Exploring History Through Clay

The Historical prompt revealed the depth of creativity and dedication within the guild. Some members went beyond surface-level inspiration, uncovering fascinating histories and personal connections.

  • One participant crafted a traditional vessel used in marriage ceremonies by certain First Nation cultures. This piece honored the cultural significance and ceremonial use of pottery in those communities.

  • Another artist created face jugs, a form historically made by enslaved African Americans in the United States. These jugs carry deep cultural and emotional meaning, and the artist’s work paid tribute to that legacy.

  • A mother and daughter duo discovered potters in their family tree dating back centuries. They recreated vessels similar to those their ancestors made, connecting past and present through their craft.

These examples show how the Quarterly Clay Quest encourages members to grow not only technically but also intellectually and emotionally. The research and reflection involved deepen their appreciation for pottery’s role in human history.

2026 Upcoming Prompts

The Quarterly Clay Quest continues to offer fresh challenges throughout 2026. The upcoming prompts are:

  • Q2: Collab, set of 3

This prompt encourages collaboration between members or the creation of a cohesive set of three pieces. It pushes artists to think about harmony, contrast, and teamwork.

  • Q3: Lidded

Creating lidded vessels requires precision and creativity. This prompt challenges members to explore form and function, balancing aesthetics with practical design.

  • Q4: Teapot

Teapots are complex objects that combine utility with artistry. This prompt invites members to experiment with spouts, handles, lids, and surface decoration.

Each prompt builds on the last, offering new opportunities for discovery and skill development. The program’s structure keeps members engaged and motivated throughout the year.

Encouraging Lifelong Learning and Artistic Growth

The Quarterly Clay Quest is more than just a series of challenges. It is a platform for lifelong learning and artistic growth. The program’s structure helps artists set goals and maintain momentum throughout the year.

By participating, members expand their technical skills, deepen their cultural knowledge, and strengthen their creative confidence. We look forward to seeing how the program continues to shape our community in the years ahead!
